Family Counselling & Therapy in Langley

Family counselling helps your whole family communicate, work through conflict, and reconnect, with the family as the focus rather than any one person. At Lavender Counselling, our registered clinical counsellors offer family counselling in person at our Langley office.

When one person is struggling, the whole family feels it. Family counselling gives everyone a supported space to be heard, repair trust, and move forward together.

Family Counselling

When everyone is hurting, but no one feels heard

It rarely starts with one big blow-up. It builds. The dinners that turn tense, the same argument on a loop, the slammed door, the silence that stretches longer each week. Maybe one person in your family is struggling and everyone else is orbiting around it, walking on eggshells, taking sides, exhausted. Maybe two households are trying to become one. Maybe a loss, an illness, a separation, or a move has knocked the whole family off balance and you can’t seem to find your footing again. Everyone is doing their best, and somehow it keeps landing as conflict.

You’ve probably tried to fix it from the inside. Family meetings, new rules, a fresh start that lasts a week. You’ve maybe pulled one person aside, hoping that if they changed, the rest would settle. But families don’t work like a line of dominoes. They work like a system, where every person affects every other person, and where the same painful pattern can repeat no matter how much everyone wants it to stop.

“The problem usually isn’t a bad person in the family. It’s a stuck pattern between people who care about each other and can’t find their way back to one another.”

At Lavender Counselling, family counselling works with the family as a whole, not just one member who needs fixing. We help you see the patterns you’re all caught in, slow down the moments that keep going sideways, and rebuild the kind of communication where people feel safe enough to be honest. Our approach is relational and collaborative. We’re not here to assign blame or pick a side. We’re here to help your family understand each other again and move forward together.

We work with families throughout Langley and the Lower Mainland. Family counselling is available in person at our Langley office, whichever makes it easiest for your household to be in the room together.

Challenges We Help With

Family counselling is about the relationships between you, the dynamics in the household, and the patterns that keep everyone stuck. Here are some of the situations families bring to us.

Communication & Conflict

  • The same arguments cycling through the household with no resolution
  • Conversations that quickly escalate into yelling, tears, or someone walking out
  • Family members who have stopped talking to each other altogether
  • Feeling unheard, dismissed, or misunderstood by the people closest to you
  • Tension you can feel the moment everyone is in the same room

Parenting & Household Dynamics

  • Parents who disagree on rules, discipline, or how to handle a struggling child
  • Constant power struggles between parents and children or teens
  • One child’s behaviour pulling focus and energy from the whole family
  • Sibling conflict that has grown beyond ordinary rivalry
  • Feeling like you’re parenting against each other instead of together

Blended & Step Families

  • Bringing two households, two sets of routines, and two parenting styles together
  • Step-parents and step-children finding their footing with each other
  • Loyalty binds, where children feel caught between parents or homes
  • Co-parenting tension that spills into the new family
  • Building belonging and shared rhythms in a family that is still forming

Supporting a Struggling Member

  • Rallying around a child, teen, or adult facing anxiety, depression, or other challenges
  • The whole family organized around one person’s crisis or recovery
  • Worry, resentment, or burnout building in the people doing the supporting
  • Learning how to help without taking over or losing yourselves
  • Repairing connection that has frayed under the strain

Big Transitions & Loss

  • Separation or divorce reshaping how the family lives and relates
  • Grief after the death of a family member, affecting everyone differently
  • A serious illness or diagnosis that changes daily life for the household
  • A move, a job loss, or a major change pulling the family off balance
  • An older child leaving home and the family finding a new shape

Trust & Repair Across the Household

  • Rebuilding trust after secrets, conflict, or a painful rupture
  • Old hurts between family members that never got fully resolved
  • Estrangement or distance you want to find a careful way back from
  • Patterns passed down through generations that you want to change
  • Wanting to feel like a family that genuinely enjoys being together again

How We Support Families

We approach every family and every story as unique. There’s no script here, no predetermined verdict about who is right or wrong. Instead, you’ll find a counsellor whose job is to understand the whole system, the relationships, the roles, and the patterns, and to help your family find a better way to be together.

1 Understand the Whole System ▾

Before anything else, we work to understand your family as a whole. Who’s in the household, how you relate to one another, the roles people have fallen into, and the patterns that keep repeating. We’re less interested in finding the one person to blame and more interested in the dynamic between you all. Often the family arrives convinced the problem is one member, and the work helps everyone see how the whole system is involved, and how everyone can be part of the change.

“We don’t take sides. Our job is to be on the side of the relationship, and to help every person in the room feel understood.”
2 Slow Down the Stuck Patterns ▾

Most families come in caught in a loop. One person pursues, another withdraws. A small comment sets off a familiar fight. The same conversation ends the same way every time. We help you slow these moments right down so you can see the pattern as it happens, understand what each person is really feeling underneath, and notice the unmet needs driving the conflict. Naming the pattern together can take a lot of the heat out of it.

“When a family can see the pattern instead of just living inside it, the fight stops being about who’s right and starts being about how to find each other again.”
3 Rebuild Communication & Connection ▾

Once the family can see what’s happening between them, we work on new ways of relating. That can mean learning to listen so people actually feel heard, repairing trust after a rupture, finding language for feelings that usually come out as anger, and giving each person room to speak without being shut down. We draw on relational, emotion-focused, and systemic approaches, and we tailor the work to your family’s stage and situation, whether that’s a blended family finding its rhythm or a household supporting someone through a hard season.

“Connection isn’t restored by one big conversation. It’s rebuilt in small, repeated moments where people feel safe enough to be honest.”

Our Approach Helps Your Family

  • Communicate in ways where people actually feel heard and understood

Why Choose Lavender for Family Counselling?

01

We Work With the Whole Family

We don’t single out one person as the problem. We work with the relationships and patterns between everyone, so the change holds because the whole system shifts, not just one member.

02

Relational, Non-Blaming Approach

Our counsellors stay on the side of the relationship, not any one person. We create a space where every family member, from the youngest to the oldest, can feel heard without fear of being ganged up on.

03

Find Your Perfect Fit

Not sure if we’re right for your family? Start with a free 20-minute consultation. If the first counsellor isn’t the match you need, we’ll help you find another, no pressure, no judgment.

04

Consistent, Quality Care

We have some of the highest clinician retention rates in the region. For family work, where trust takes time to build across several people, that continuity really matters.

05

No Artificial Timelines

We don’t push quick fixes or predetermined session limits. Some families need focused support through one transition; others come back as new chapters arrive. You set the pace.

What to Expect in Family Counselling

A warm, welcoming Lavender Counselling space for family sessions

Your First Session

Your first session is about your counsellor getting to know your family and how you relate to one another. There’s no expectation that everyone arrives ready to talk, or that you’ve sorted out who’s “to blame.” Your counsellor will want to hear from each person about how things feel from where they sit, and to start mapping the patterns at play. Sometimes the whole family comes; sometimes a counsellor will suggest who is most helpful to have in the room for a given session. The goal of that first meeting is to build enough trust and understanding to decide together what might help.

Our Collaborative Approach

This isn’t therapy that’s done to your family. Everyone is an active participant in understanding the patterns and shaping what change looks like. Your counsellor brings training and a steady, neutral perspective. You bring the lived expertise of your own family. Some sessions might focus on a specific conflict, others on a transition you’re navigating, and others on simply learning to hear each other differently. Who attends can shift over time, depending on what the work needs.

Confidentiality

What’s shared in family counselling stays confidential within legal and ethical boundaries, and your counsellor will walk through how this works in your first session. Because more than one person is in the room, your counsellor will also talk openly about how information is handled within the family so there are no surprises and everyone knows what to expect.

Flexible, Ongoing Support

There’s no set number of sessions and no rigid plan you have to follow. Some families come weekly through a difficult stretch, then space sessions out as things settle. Others return at key moments, a new transition, a recurring pattern, a fresh challenge. We structure support around what your family actually needs.

Our Approach Is Evidence-Informed

Work with families is grounded in established research and recognized approaches to family and relationship health. Bodies such as the American Psychological Association describe family and systemic therapies that focus on communication, relationship patterns, and the way change in one part of a family can support change across the whole. Our counsellors draw on these relational, emotion-focused, and family-systems approaches, and tailor the work to your family’s situation.

We don’t promise to erase conflict or guarantee a particular outcome. We work to help your family communicate more openly, understand the patterns between you, and rebuild connection at a pace that feels manageable for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between family counselling and individual, child, or couples therapy?

Family counselling works with the family as a unit, focusing on the relationships and patterns between you rather than on one person on their own. Individual therapy supports one person, and couples counselling focuses on the relationship between two partners. Family work is the right fit when the struggle lives in the dynamics of the household, such as parent-child conflict, blended-family adjustment, or the whole family navigating a transition together. If your child or teen needs their own space, we also offer dedicated child and teen counselling, and your counsellor can help you figure out which approach fits best.

Does the whole family have to come to every session?

Not necessarily. Many families start with everyone in the room, but who attends can shift depending on what the work needs. Sometimes it’s helpful to meet with parents on their own, or with one part of the family for a session. Your counsellor will talk through what makes sense as things progress, and there’s no expectation that everyone is present every time.

What if one family member doesn’t want to come?

This is common, and it doesn’t mean the work can’t happen. Sometimes a family begins with whoever is willing, and a reluctant member chooses to join later once they see it isn’t about blaming them. Your counsellor can also help you think about how to invite a hesitant family member in. Meaningful change often starts with the people who are ready.

Will the counsellor take sides or decide who’s right?

No. Our counsellors stay on the side of the relationship, not any one person. The goal isn’t to determine a winner or assign blame, it’s to help everyone understand the patterns you’re caught in and feel genuinely heard. A good family counsellor works to make every person in the room feel that their experience matters.

We’re a blended or step family. Can family counselling help with that?

Yes. Bringing two households together comes with real complexity, different routines, parenting styles, loyalties, and histories. Family counselling can help you build shared rhythms, support step-parents and step-children in finding their footing, ease loyalty binds for children, and reduce co-parenting tension that spills into the new family. Many families find this work especially helpful in the first year or two of forming.

One person in our family is really struggling. Is family counselling still right for us?

It can be a good fit. When one member is going through something hard, the whole family is affected, and the family’s support can be a powerful part of healing. Family counselling helps you support that person without burning out, repair connection that has frayed under the strain, and avoid the whole household organizing itself around a crisis. Depending on the situation, your counsellor may also suggest individual support for that member alongside the family work.

Can family counselling help us through a separation or divorce?

Yes. Whether you’re deciding what’s next or already restructuring the family, counselling can help you communicate more steadily, reduce the impact of conflict on children, and find a workable way forward. We don’t push toward any particular outcome. We help your family move through the change with as much steadiness and care as possible.

Where do you offer family counselling?

Family counselling takes place in person at our Langley office, where your whole family can be in the room together. Being in the same space helps everyone feel present and supported.

How long does family counselling take?

It varies. Some families see meaningful shifts in a handful of sessions, especially when focused on a specific transition or conflict. Others, where patterns are long-standing or several relationships are involved, the work takes longer. We don’t set artificial endpoints or keep you in therapy longer than you need. Your family sets the pace.

How do we know if your counsellor is the right fit for our family?

Fit matters even more in family work, because everyone in the room needs to feel comfortable. Start with a free 20-minute consultation to get a sense of the counsellor’s style. If it doesn’t feel right for your family, tell us, and we’ll help you find someone else on our team. We’d rather help you find the right match than have your family lose momentum.

Is family therapy the same as family counselling?

Yes. Family therapy and family counselling mean the same thing here, and families search for both. The work is the same either way: helping everyone in the household feel heard, and finding a way through the patterns that keep repeating.

Ready To Begin?

Reaching out for help as a family takes courage, especially when things feel tense or stuck. You don’t have to keep repeating the same painful patterns alone. We’re here to help your family find its way back to one another.
